The feeling of pain below the belly button is known by different names, such as pelvic pain or lower abdominal pain. Both men and women of any age can experience this pain, but it is a more prominent case in women of reproductive age.
This lower right side pain is often described as a burning sensation or cramp pain. It is mostly derived from the pelvic organs, such as reproductive organs and the bladder. There are different stages of pelvic pain which ranges from acute to intermittent to chronic.
Causes of pain below belly button
Urinary tract infection
Any infection that impinges on any part of your kidneys, bladder and urethra is termed as the urinary tract infection, which is one of the major causes of pain in the lower abdomen area.
This situation is often teamed up with recurrent urination, burning sensation while urinating, and cloudy as well as foul-smelling urine.
Kidney stones
When the kidney stones pass down to the urinary tract, they can cause severe pain in the abdominal area, such as in the back, side or below the ribs, which further extends to the lower abdomen and groin area.
The intensity of this pain usually fluctuates like waves and is associated with fever, vomiting or nausea in an infection.
It may also result in foul-smelling urine, cloudy or brown, red, pink-coloured urine along with a constant urge to urinate, frequent urination and pain during urination.
Sexual abuse
Any physical abuse can traumatize any part of the pelvic area or the reproductive tract, leading to pain below the belly button.
Whether or not this is the reason for your lower abdomen misery, the doctors perform a detailed diagnosis that considers the history of a patient, physical examination and relevant laboratory results.
Bladder syndrome
It is a painful and chronic medical condition that often leads to a combination of pelvic pain, bladder pain and bladder pressure. The stages of pain can range from anywhere from mild discomfort to severe pain.
The pain, in this case, is usually felt just above the pubic bone, between anus and scrotum in men and between anus and vagina in women.
In addition to these, the other common causes that lead to pain below the belly button are menopause, menstrual cramps, Endometriosis, Ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage or ovarian cysts etc., in women and swelling of the prostate gland or inguinal hernia in men. It can also be caused due to abdominal surgeries or cancerous growths.
When do you need to seek medical help?
If pelvic pain develops suddenly, it can be a symptom of a medical emergency for which you need to seek immediate medical help.
Also, if your symptoms worsen with the time associated with high fever, blood vomiting, bloody stool, and abnormal vaginal discharge, you should definitely make an appointment to see your doctor to resolve it and not let it affect your daily life.
